Electrostatic Discharge or ESD
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) is a spark, a miniature lightning jumping from a charged conductive surface to another conductive surface. This very rapid movement of a static (not moving) charge can cause fire, explosions, EMI, RF, heat, light and even sound effects. This can cause irreparably damage to the electronics. It is therefore necessary to control these invisible, inaudible and often not noticeable spark.
The term ESD is used in in the electronics and other industries to indicate the temporary adverse movements that can cause damage to electronic equipment.
ESD is a serious issue in solid state electronics such as integrated circuits. Integrated circuits are made from semiconductor materials such as silicon and insulating materials such as silicon dioxide. Either one of these materials can suffer permanent damage when exposed to high voltages. As a result, there are now a number of antistatic devices that help prevent static build up.
ESD Control products are supplied to most of the leading manufacturers in many industries such as Automotive, Electronics & Solar Cells, IT & Multimedia, Medical, Aerospace and Defence
